Our Team
Selection of Our Tutors
TCT team members are students or graduates of elite colleges and universities with strong academic credentials, test scores, and references. All tutors participate in an extensive interview process as well as a background and reference check. Each has a demonstrated interest in working with school-aged children, an ability to motivate students, and an innate talent for making learning fun.
While all TCT tutors share a passion for teaching and learning, they come from a diversity of fields including engineering, pre-law, psychology, social work, mathematics, and pre-medical programs. Their expertise in various academic disciplines allows Thinking Caps to meet the needs of a broad variety of students with a wide range of objectives, from a middle school student who needs homework help to a high school student seeking preparation for a standardized exam.
Training
All TCT tutors are individually selected, hired, and trained to become the best tutors in the business. We achieve this ideal through an extensive training program. Our program allows trainees to gain in-depth practice by leading model classes and observing the lessons of experienced tutors. Thanks to our years of experience, we are familiar with the particular demands of the curricula in area schools and train tutors accordingly.
All our tutors receive training in the study skills methodology, helping them understand the typical methods of academic organization expected of students in area schools. The Thinking Caps Study Skills Program teaches tutors how to help students with the fundamentals of organization, time management, and how to study for tests and quizzes as consistent with our manual, Tutor in a Book (Adams Media 2010). Tutors learn how to identify learning styles, assess learning strengths, and personalize teaching techniques to each individual student.
Our standardized test preparatory tutors boast exceptional test scores and complete an extensive training course with staff directors. Test prep tutors are trained in specific tests, including SAT, ACT, SAT subject tests, ISEE, SSAT, and state tests. The curriculum includes review of fundamental concepts and training in test strategies and familiarity. Tutors are trained in the TCT methodology consistent with our SAT DeMystified and ACT DeMystified (McGraw-Hill 2011) series.
Academic Coordinator
An Academic Coordinator is assigned to every family to serve as a liaison between the parent, tutor and student. The function of the Academic Coordinator is to develop customized study strategies and learning plans, consistently monitor the tutoring process by working with the tutor and family, and communicate with the family to discuss the student's needs and progress.
